Juria Mora : A folktale on a motif
This project is an attempt to connect the dots between the culture I am from to what I have learnt during these years. The project focuses on understanding of various motifs used by an Assamese weaver in expressing her thoughts through coded messages of symbols.
“ The weaver would weave a cloth using a certain series of motifs for a person whom she loved and a different series of motifs for a person whom she respects.The visual representations of her emotions used as motifs were a coded meaning which is expressed through her profound skill of binding warps and wefts together ”
I tried an amalgamation of existing motifs and storytelling through an Assamese folktale which is about an evolution of a motif. I have also tried to maintain the hand woven effect of a fabric by using motifs and backgrounds directly from authentic hand woven fabrics of the region and framing them digitally and forming
the composition.
The challenging part of the project was to find humanistic figures that were required for the story.
But none of such motifs existed in the handloom library, hence I took the challenge to understand the technical skill and created the complex humanistic characters in guidance with a professional weaver.
